It's not the news parents want to receive to start the school year.

The Sudbury Student Services Consortium issued a release this afternoon advising the media and the public that a small number of bus routes do not have permanent drivers for the coming school year.

"Due to a school bus driver shortage that is affecting some local companies, a few school buses will be arriving late and leaving late from school," the consortium said.

Specifically, the consortium said bus routes L004 and L016 (New Sudbury and South End) will be running "very late" for the start of the year.

The morning pickups on these routes will be approximately 45 minutes later than scheduled, the consortium reported, while the afternoon drop-offs will be delayed by some 30 minutes.

All affected parents and schools will be contacted before the end of day Sept. 1, and the information will be posted on the consortium website.

"The Sudbury Student Services Consortium is working closely with school bus operators in finding solutions and ensures that recruitment efforts are ongoing," the news release stated. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to parents, students and schools."
